When a kitsune has lived a thousand years they become a Tenko, or a heavenly fox, and ascend to heaven. Common numbers in folktales are one, five, seven, and nine, with nine being the most a fox could achieve. Incidentally, it also looks remarkably like the Pokmon called Ninetales, a Fire-type Pokmon with yellow fur and nine tails. They make a brief appearance in 'Shang-Chi' but seem much more benevolent than their man-devouring origins. Their tails are directly connected to how powerful they are. In the text, Huli Jing are described as shape-shifting spirits who eat men and have cries that sound like babies. Also the fact that the lng was associated with a river (a source of water) makes Shang-Chi's depiction of mythical Chinese creatures that much more authentic. The Fenghuang is an immortal bird that's often paired with the Chinese dragon as representing yin and yang to symbolize the balance in the universe. One other major difference between the kitsune and the huli jing is that for every one-hundred years the kitsune lives, they gain a tail. In contrast, there are the Yako, who are mischievous and malicious. The Inari are good foxes and messenger spirits of Inari Ōkami, god of fertility, agriculture and industry. But where the Chinese perception of fox spirits developed linearly as popular opinion changed across dynasties, the Japanese kitsune actually branched out and subdivided into many different types - a lot of regional variations, and two common categories. They are depicted as both good and evil, as tricksters and lovers, and with supernatural wisdom. In many respects, the Japanese kitsune is very similar to the Chinese huli jing.

Update, 6.9.20: The headline and some of the text of this post have been changed for clarity, and quotes from author Zaretta Hammond were deleted because they didn’t fully and accurately reflect her views.Order Form - Fountas & Pinnell Classroom™ If people truly understood the needless damage being done by our schools every day, they would be out in the streets demanding change. Well-intentioned as it may be, the prevailing approach to literacy is failing millions of children who are disproportionately black and brown. Even if students manage to graduate from high school, they may not be able to read and understand a newspaper article or an instruction manual-or read and write at all. Their teachers water down grade-level material because they don’t know what else to do. When they get to high school, they may not know basic facts like the difference between a city and a state, or what the American Revolution was-not because they can’t learn those things, but because no one has taught them those things. In addition to depriving them-and us-of the opportunity to live up to their potential, this system is making untold numbers of them feel like failures for no good reason.Įspecially in schools where test scores are low, students may get nothing but math and “reading” through middle school. And given stagnant or declining reading scores, there’s plenty of evidence it doesn’t. There’s no evidence that leveled reading boosts comprehension. Maybe by this time you’ve concluded that you’re just not a good reader and never will be. When school finally reopens, your teacher finds you’ve slipped to a first-grade reading level. Now imagine your school has been closed for months because of Covid-19, and you’ve had little or no access to instruction of any kind. In any event, you keep practicing your “skills,” because your teacher assures you that if you do you’ll become a better reader. Or maybe almost everyone in your class is also reading below grade level. Maybe you jealously eye other kids who are reading books at level R or S-or even T, a fifth-grade level. After the test, the teacher says you’re a level “L”-a second-grade level.Įvery day during the two- or three-hour reading block, your teacher demonstrates a comprehension skill-maybe “visualizing,” or “comparing and contrasting.” Then you and your classmates practice it on books you can choose, as long as they’re at your level. Nor do you know the words fossil, ancient, and grubs. Maybe you can’t even read those words because you’ve never been taught how to sound them out. You’re not sure what a crocodile or a dinosaur is you haven’t learned anything about them in school. One day, she gives you a passage about how crocodiles are related to dinosaurs. She’ll ask you to read a text while she counts the number of mistakes you make, then ask questions to test your comprehension. Periodically, your teacher takes you and each of your classmates aside and tests your individual reading levels. By contrast, most elementary classrooms use a form of tracking that goes by the name “leveled reading.” Imagine you’re a fourth-grader. is more than 70,800 synonyms and 47,200 antonyms available. The PlayStation 2 is one of the sixth generations of video console that operates in a 128-bit processor together with Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo GameCube, and Microsoft Xbox. It was initially marketed in Japan in March 2000, succeeded by the launch in North America in October, and in Europe and Australia in November of the same year. If the on-screen controls are tricky to deal with, it’s also possible to connect a remote via Bluetooth as well.In 2000, Sony Interactive Entertainment introduced their second home video game console PlayStation 2, from their PlayStation family. It’s possible to play the game in landscape and portrait, in the latter option, the top half of the screen will show the game, and the bottom will be the controls. The emulator offers on-screen controls to interact with the game, and they are fairly alright to work with. Step 5: Getting familiar with the controls and settings To play a game, just tap on it in the main menu. Whenever new games are added to that folder, they should automatically show in the emulator. This is why it’s a good idea to store the PS2 games in one folder, since here, users can simply set that folder as the main directory. Once you have a BIOS file, upload it in the app where indicated.įinally, the last step in the emulator setup is to pick a directory. From a legal perspective, just ensure you own a physical copy of the console before obtaining a BIOS file. The emulator recommends obtaining this file from a personal home console, but there are ways to do this without a console. Without this, the emulator will simply not work. The next step is to import the BIOS and this is a really important step. This increases the frame rate to make games more playable but this comes at the cost of reduced compatibility with games. Then, there is a settings page, and some bits here are a little complicated but should just be ignored.Ĭommonly, the Optimal/Safe Defaults is the default choice, however, those with particularly lower-end devices should pick the Fast/Unsafe Defaults option. There is a useful FAQ page detailing information about the emulator and some information about how users can improve performance and deal with other issues. Step 4: Loading up the games on the emulatorĪetherSX2 is a user-friendly emulator, in that when first opened, the app guides the user through a set-up process. After extracting the required file, it’s fine to then delete the archived one as that is no longer needed. This makes it easier to locate where PS2 games are stored if needed later and keeps PS2 games separated from other ROMs you might have for other emulators. It is a good idea to create a folder on your Android phone specifically for PS2 games. The file of interest is the one ending in the file extension “. You'll love the Pimp of the Year contest, Kung Fu Joe, the Big Brim Bar, Soul Train, Hammer, Slammer, Slade and Flyguy. The cost of the rental alone is worth watching the scene where the guy gets out of prison, and he has been incarcerated for so long that his clothes are out of style. Wayans did a wonderful job mocking the ridiculous exploitation movies of the seventies. If you don't see this movie it is a shame. Then when the stuntman turns around, it's back to the actress playing Spade's Mother. She turns around and then suddenly the camera cuts from a black lady to a white male with a mustache and afro wig wearing the same clothes she is wearing, he does some back flips and then beats up the thugs. One of my all time favorite scenes is when they mock the stunt doubles and you have Jack Spade's mother who is about to beat up some thugs. It had so much that was hilarious that I don't know where to begin. remake of this film called Slade, Hammer and Slammer) and it helped the Wayans create another show for Fox called In Living Color. Not only did this film jump start all of these older actors careers, but it was popular enough to warrant a series pilot (a t.v. Will these vigilantes be enough to end the crime spree of Mister Big? A flat out funny film from Keenan Ivory Wayans. So he enlists the help of the former local crime fighter Slade (Bernie Casey) and his co-horts Hammer, Slammer and Kung-Fu Joe (Jim Brown, Issac Hayes and Steven James). But he's going to need help toppling the evil Mister Big (John Vernon). The death of his younger brother June-Bug Spade and the vicious "assault" on his mother by two local thugs (Damon Wayans and Kardeem Hardison) causes Jack to wage war on the criminal elements in his neighborhood. Keenan stars as Jack Spade an ex-veteran who returns home after a stint in the army. He also wrote and stars in this production. I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988) was Keenan Ivory Wayans directorial debut. My advice to parents is to watch the film secretly and then feign shock when your kids ask to see it! When the kids are at least teens, then it's probably okay to let them know the truth-that this is a great little comedy. FYI-Because of the language and brief nudity, this is not a film for the kids. Also, it may help to try watching a couple Blaxploitation films FIRST to help you understand the parody better. One word of warning though: if you are a die-hard, bleeding-heart, politically correct individual, this movie MIGHT give you a heart attack! We showed this movie to such a friend and we eventually had to turn off the video because she was having heart palpitations! But, for everyone else, this is a hilarious film. Additionally, many old stars of the genre are here, though I might have enjoyed seeing a few more of them. It is pure mindless fun from start to finish. The jokes come one after another after another and very few of them miss the mark. The film is a very funny send-off of the terrible Blaxploitation films of the 70s. Unlike these other works, the jokes are not are consistently funny. If you know Keenen Ivory Wayans and Damon Wayans ONLY for their TV work or movies such as Major Payne or Scary Movie, then you have only seen them at their most mediocre. |
